In general, a plantain is a vegetable that belongs to a banana family. As a Musaceae member, it is starchy in nature. It should be cooked before the use because it is not edible in raw form. Just like the way banana, it is a perennial herbaceous plant that emerges from underground.

The size of a plantain depends upon the type of cultivar but normally the measurement is about 3 to 10 inches. It can be served as an alternate of potatoes.
