Chickpeas have a nutty flavor and slightly crunchy texture. You can use dried chickpeas, soaked overnight for this popular Indian snack, but the canned chickpeas varieties are also flavorsome for this spicy chickpeas snack recipe.

Indian cooks also grind these chickpeas to make flour that is called gram flour. This flour is used to make bread, thicken sauces and to make batters for deep-fried dishes.

Place the potatoes in a saucepan and add enough water to just cover and bring to the boil. Cover and simmer for 10 minutes over a medium heat until tender. Now drain and set aside.

Put the chickpeas in a bigger bowl.

Make the tamarind paste combining tamarind with little water in a separate bowl. Add chili powder, sugar and salt and mix well. Pour the mixture over the chickpeas.

Peel the boil potatoes and cut into small pieces and add to the chickpeas. Add onion also and mix it slowly, taking care not to break potatoes. Season with black pepper to taste.

Transfer to a serving bowl and garnish with tomatoes pieces, if using, green chilies and fresh coriander leaves.
